The symptoms of a brainstem stroke can vary widely and may include:

Difficulty with vital functions such as breathing

Problems with chewing, swallowing, or speaking

Weakness or paralysis in the arms, legs, and/or face

Loss or alteration of sensation

Hearing loss

Vision problems, such as double vision

Vertigo (a sensation of spinning while not moving)

Locked-in syndrome (a rare condition where the person is conscious but unable to move anything except the eyes)

As brainstem stroke is a medical emergency, doctors will aim to make a quick and accurate diagnosis using several tests, which may include:

Neurological examination – assessing brain and nerve function

CT angiography – to view blood vessels in the brain and neck

MRI scan – to create detailed images of brain tissue

MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) – to assess blood vessels

ECG and echocardiogram – to evaluate heart function

Doppler ultrasound – to examine blood flow in arteries

Blood tests – to check for clotting issues, infection, and overall health

Oxygen level measurement, and kidney/liver function tests to guide treatment
